And here are my thoughts on this.

You have two candidates Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram both equally crooked and corrupt. They belong to different parties naam ke vaste, but that is is. Now when it comes to vote, there may not be much difference if you vote Aaya Ram or Gaya Rama, but consider this, say Aya Ram is the sitting candidate, he may not have done much, but when he knows that after 5 years, people will vote and throw him out, he might just be forced to do some work. Yeah ur just substituting Aya Ram with Gaya Ram, but end of day, both candidates can't take their place for granted.

Now instead of Aya Ram and Gaya Ram, say there is a 3rd candidate in the fray Mr.X, who has had a good record, is believed to be clean, maybe a first timer, not belonging to any party. So here again by voting you have the choice to elect Mr.X as the candidate of your choice.

Now if you don't turn up to vote, chances are that Aya Ram( or Gaya Ram), whoever is the sitting MLA, just begins to feel complacent, the feeling would be "Why should I do work, anyway ppl won't vote will not make much difference?". What is even worse, is non voting will hurt the genuine Mr.X, a person who needs every single vote he/she can, unlike Aaya Ram or Gaya Ram, they don't have a community that will vote en bloc for them, irrespective of what they do.

-- Ratnakar

Yep. In the political reasons, I'd like to mention what we spoke about, which prompted you to share this link - feminist leadership.

We need a leadership sensitive to gender and the differences in power it brings about. Not saying the politician has to be a woman - Shiela Dixit is a woman and a hideous chauvinist, but a man/woman/transgender person who believes in safeguarding against gender domination.

While it may seem like not directly related, it certainly will make a difference, because the attitude of the leader influences the kinds of things that are considered "allowed". Crimes happen with impunity when the public know the leader blames the victim.

In fact, I'll go a step ahead and say anyone with chauvinistic views should not be allowed to manage things related with people contact - fom PM, to HM, etc CMs.... put them in freaking agriculture or something, where their attitudes are less relevant to masses. Ideally, keep them out of power, because they provide legitimacy to objectifying and victimizing women.

This is the one I had forgotten :D

@vidyut: Thanks so very much for the comment and a...

@vidyut: Thanks so very much for the comment and also pointing out the missing aspect: geographical / locational reason in Delhi, as one of the blanket resource used by the offenders.

The solution i feel is two folded legal and moral from with in society. The crowd cant b the defense of the women and also less crowd cant b license to the ill-mind.

While i certainly take ur point, and this could be a starting point, the end goal has to change in mindset of society.

But prior to anything the government which ever be the party, has to be sensitive towards solving the issue and first step be punishing and punishing quickly. Till the time we have heads of government blaming women for the offense, no amount of measure taken to avoid crime will succeed, as they niyat (vision) is more imp than takat (force). And as i say entire administrative right from constable to lawyer and doctor who facilitated the rapist must b taken in the round up as stern warning of not helping the criminal of such serious offense. last thing, rape although committed on individual should be treated as individual - even if girl wants to withdraw case due to pressure or whatever, the offender has to punished

Rest we pretty much share similar idea. It i...

Let me begin with saying I like your article. It is sound, it analyses important issues and puts them so anyone can understand. This is important.

I particularly enjoyed you stating bluntly ' The idea "Not to rape" is required in the society and not "NOT TO GET raped". ' This is much needed.

I agree with the political/system approach and it is something we discussed in another context as well - our system is misogynistic. This needs to change. Shiela Dixit's response is an example. Another is the Delhi Police Commissioner's recently. I remember being furious when I wrote http://aamjanata.com/delhi-police-commissioner-i-demand-you-resign/

I would like to contribute another perspective, which is somewhat geographical - for the capital of the country, Delhi also is sprawling. There is abundant privacy to engage with predatory behavior without challenge, and it makes it very difficult to police.

I remember a friend saying that she was surprised to be harassed in Mumbai, and I said without thinking, but it is the truth - I said "Mumbai isn't morally or culturally better or anything. Simple fact is that to be obscene in Mumbai, you have to be within arms distance to someone else.

No matter the locality, no matter the time of the day or night, it is very rare to be the only person on the street for long. Too many people. someone or the other comes along. While this feels crowded and irritating, it provides a natural protection in terms of not offering much isolation. Crimes still happen - crowded and all.

Delhi on the other hand is vast. It is less dense in terms of population. Abundant isolated areas provide natural opportunities to be out of sight of stray public. Unless this is understood and a solution designed to work around it, policing is destined to fail. It is impossible to police everything all the time.

At some point, it is going to be needed to encourage people to use the city and keep it busy round the clock as the best defense and monitor less busy areas. Which happens to be the exact opposite of what the Police Commissioner or before him, Shiela Dixit are prescribing.

I think you touch on an important point about the attitudes in the sense that there needs to be a robust and matter of fact challenge to the problem instead of managing it. You don't manage what you don't want - you freaking eradicate it - if you get my point. There needs to be far more determination among the guardians of the city.

I had thought of a few other things, but I can't seem to remember them now. One I remember feeling important about... will return if/when I remember.

Thanks for speaking up, writing. For example, am sure lakhs of those who came out on streets never knew how a bill is passed. Now they know :) Or many of us did not know that 17 bills were passed in 10 minutes!

And if because of this movement, all those who participated in it will stop breaking traffic rules atleast, India will become a safer place to live!

-Sudhir

Self structured quotes are quite inspiring and mot...

Self structured quotes are quite inspiring and motivational.specially this one is good "U alwayz get it WHat u want, n if u DONT, u havent tried enuf!!!"True

Good write up... You have included many points whos answers must be sought for.
But one thing I want to say that The revolution isn't keeping in Mind merely Annaji or the MMS, RAUL vinci.
The public was severely hurt.. Their restrain had reached a thresh hold point. The suppression of Baba Ramdev ji & midnight brutality on 4th June added up to Public anger. At the same time PUBLIC Got a leader, a Crusader... its Always that people feel cheated or betrayed by Govt policies n socio political situations they want to stand for cause but majority wants BHAGAT SINGH to be born in neighbour’s house.
Now the question come Why PM under its ambit.
See all of us want a STRONG tool / Law to fight back deep rooted corruption in Indian society.
Do you know why KIRAN BEDI ji has a strong n impartial image? This is because she never let anyone escape.. Whosoever broke Law was punished. Eg. In early days of Her carrier she even didn’t let escape Then PM Indira Gandhi’s Car when it broke traffic rule.. She officially took Challan n then only let the CAR go…
A message was sent across masses CRANE BEDI will not forgive if you break traffic rule. The effect of this was the Traffic of Delhi was stream line.. Do you remember – “Bhaya bin priti na hoye Gosai” .
Same is with Lokpal Bill.. If PM stature person will be accountable there will be a message that everyone is under its ambit.. This fear will help reduce corruption t lower strata too.
Second THE MEDIA across the nation has made a Issue this is MOB that is gathered in Ramlila Grounds.. They don’t know about JLP bill. Media is seriously confusing masses by just entangling them in legalities of this Bill.
If masses have been so aware.. Do Govt think Congress would have been able to befool people n rule for 6 decades!
I want ask does media forgot Golma devi an elected representative from Rajasthan.. Who was from Congress party but her degree of unawareness was that .. When Asked by media Apni jeet par kya kahengi.. See replied.. Kaa kahengi… bas je hi.. ki Atalji humare Pradhan mantra hain aur unke Naitritva mei hum sahi kaam koroongi.. She said this in typical rural Dialect. She didn’t even knew that she was Cong Candidate.. n PM was MMS.. This is reality.. People who don’t even know the age of their child can cast vote,, Give mandate on which leaders like Sibbal can boast! But if same people come to Ramlila Maidaan n express their anger Govt n media questions of Awareness level.. Might be all must not be knowing what JLP bill actually is.. but We can judge the anger against corruption & present Upa Govt.. Can’t WE??
Thirdly if someone Like Anna ji has awakened masses, united them , made them stand for a cause.. we must utilise this opportunity to enlighten masses.. to educate them.. The need of hour is socio- Political change.. Not only Legislative.. Social change will come by this revolution.. Once society will start giving FAME n RECOGNITION on the basis of Values n qualities of INDIVIDUALS.. Once people will start looking down to the corrupt.. The basic desire to get recognition n fame by just acquiring POWER or MONEY through any way will disappear.. This will help us uproot corruption from the system!!
This is best time to strengthen our VALUE system & NORMS. These are best informal way to stop corruption prevailing in society.. Think that way too… Keep writing.. Jay, this is in continuance to my co...

prashanthkpp:
Jay, this is in continuance to my comments to your note on FB yesterday.

My skepticism with the Anna Hazare movement only increases by the day. There seems to be a sort of restless discomfort inherently hiding somewhere within the whole movement which the masses are missing out on and only the leaders are aware of. I may be too suspicious of the issue but my lingering intuition tells me that there is more to a conspiracy behind this movement that what we, the general public who stand to support it have understood. I cannot voice it here for fear of isolation however, I will adopt a wait and watch before succumbing to the Anna Hazare movement.

Further, the precedent being set out here is very dangerous. It ridicules and downsizes the importance and sanctity of Parliament. If there is disagreement with the functioning of the Parliament, that should be addressed in the same manner in which the Parliament has been instituted and that is by Ballot. By adopting to such civil strife, a must in this instance of corruption I agree, there must be an intention of compromise for discussion. If obstinacy rules over sentiments, the purpose and intent of the movement gets lost in focus. Right now both the parties are submerged with obstinate intentions not willing to settle down to a mid point where matters could be discussed. That sort of an attitude is not appropriate for any civil strife. Public strength should be exhibited; thereafter which negotiations should take place. By attaching to uncompromising rigidity they are diluting the essence of its value.

Again, the danger looming behind this movement is the habitual frequency it might end up with each and every discord public has with the Government. For example, Anna Hazare in his speech the other day was voluble in proclaiming that this is not the end to further issues he intends to take up after resolving corruption. He intends to take up the Farmer’s Land Grab issue soon after this. It is an open threat to the existence of an elected body. It will bring in chaos and anarchy. A dangerous precedent!

Anna Hazare cannot move this JLPB forward without the support of a political party. No civil representation can proceed beyond a certain perimeter without the backing political parties. Anna Hazare has openly rebuked and refused the support of BJP. Which other political party can provide him with the numbers required to force the Government to a corner? His movement cannot sustain a lengthy time period. If the Government so chooses to play it with time, there will be drastic reduction in the now well nourished size of the movement. After all everyone has their personal priorities and families to take care of and unlike Anna Hazare, Bhushans, Kejriwals, Bedis etc, who are all retired people, the people on the street, now backing them, cannot sustain a lengthy process of agitation sacrificing job and family. There will be dilution. It would be prudent of Anna Hazare not to let that happen and begin talks with the Government without being obstinate.

thanks sanjeev and nancy

thanks sanjeev and nancy

Well written Jay... The the various comments augmenting your sentiment is proof enough of the sentiments prevalent not just on Dr. Swamy's subject but as a dejected Hindu on the whole.

It is plain truth that both Islam and Christianity in India owes itself to the direct 'conversion' that took places over the centuries, mostly out of compulsion, some out of desire. Regardless, to ignore one's forefathers, deny their respectful ancestry and latch on to a ignominious claim of "divine origin", in India, is not just sufficient reason for smirking but detestable. It is a fact that there is not a SINGLE Muslim or Christian, in INDIA, who can claim roots more to their divine origin than thanks to the valuable sperm of a kind Hindu. That they opt to live in this preposterous lie is a different matter all together. They belong to monolithic, man made, iconoclastic religions having all the vagaries and fantasies human beings have. They can not be a distant mile closer to the humble philosophies Hinduism imparts through Santana Dharma, nor can they comprehend, because their dogma is not revealed, but rigid. Over centuries they have begun to bring in the word 'revealed' to camouflage the sordid contents of their 'holy book' which only perpetrates violence as the only option for survival and degrades women to just a child bearing machine.

Dr. Swamy is not just right, he is a thousand fold right. There was nothing degrading, blasphemous, inciting, provoking or demeaning in his letter addressed to the Muslims of India. All he stated was facts and a suggestion to improve the fundamentals of a united India from its current parochial polarized form of existence. He just amplified the sentiment of 'Nation first', a sentiment lacking in these two dogmas - sadly. Some of his pivotal points highlighted a measure of positivity as to how easily the Nation at large could circumvent this polarization. So what is wrong in that? Why even read it as a threatening and cacophonous unless some elements within want to project it as such and score mileage?

And this is exactly what has happened in Dr. Swamy's instance too. Nothing more than this can be expected of a religion that cries foul & fatwa at anything that 'THEY' feel insinuating because of its insular outlook. This is abundantly utilized to its maximum by those political parties that amplify such issues in the name of petty vote bank politics. In fact, it is the defiance of established authority, religious and secular, social and political, as a world-wide phenomenon that assists provocation of otherwise ignorable candidness of Dr. Swamy.

And to sum up, what is secular? There is nothing near to what secular means in its right context in comparison to what is present INDIA. It has become a word for the several illiterate MPs like Yadavs, Paswans, Diggys, Rauls et al to use at will and desire without even knowing an iota of its meaning. You ask them - I bet - the answer will be Hindu / Muslim Unity.

The root cause for violent disharmony around the world in general and India in particular has been the rigidity of minority religions, their exclusion from society, their barbaric beliefs outrageously obsolete and not pertinent to the present day world and their fanaticism. In India, Minorities, especially Muslims, are spoon fed and blessed with behemothic privileges granted in the name of vote bank politics predominantly by the Congress Party at the Center and several regional parties at the State level. A mere 18% has eroded into the cultural, social and religious fabric of our Nation and managed to alter the balance. Hindus, by and large due to their disunity, has catered to this erosion. Politics has played a vast part too in erosion.

Under this context, one Dr.Swamy is a Saint and Savior of not only the religion but also the Nation!

Thanks Jay!

India is being hijacked in the name of secularism....

India is being hijacked in the name of secularism. These are out right source for BIG CORRUPTION.

Let's think Positive and Pro-active, stand to Build a Strong Vibrant Nation.

Mahendra Patel

Good job Jaymin! Burma, Singapore, Cambodia, THailand,South Africa & many more South African Countries; & in mostly all parts of globe.

Nowadays many a Hindu preachers/saints/organizations like Brahm kumaris, Art of Living, Vivekananda Foundation, Ramakrishna Foundations ,Swaminarayan's, Gurudwaras ,Buddhism preachers& his getting elected, and then think of getting re-elected. If he would have to sacrifice all the money 'invested' in election, what good would be getting re-elected? Seriously, who wants to enter politics without being able to recover the money they put in? I...

I would go with what Voltaire had said long ago. I may not agree in entirety what Swamy had penned in that op-ed article. But I stand here to defend his right to free speech.

That said, I also would also take a bow to the newspaper's solemn decision to publish that article and kick start a thought process that had long been buried by the free press in name of practicing secular journalism.

Aditya Sinha of DNA deserves our praise for his bold decision. And we even need to defend his right to free press.

Secular journalism has brought a new culture dumbed down version of free press.

George Washington had said that if freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, [as we are now currently by this secular media] like the sheep to the slaughter house. We have by keeping mum, allowed ourselves to the sound of tireless voices around us, whereas we deserve to hear the music of our own opinions.

In other countries where liberty is the sole virtue of their democracy, the majority raises formidable barriers around the liberty of opinion within which an author's free opinion is allowed to flourish. That said, the author also keeps himself within these liberty barriers. Rightly so, as Marshall Lumsden had opined once that at no time is freedom of speech more precious than when a man hits his thumb with a hammer!

But in our free country, barriers are often blurred to suit the polity. A book is often banned in one state based on the vote bank politics of that state's ruling class, whereas the same book is freely sold in other states!

In our country when it suits the political society, we allow Taslima Nasreen to settle down here to show-case our free speech culture. But the same Taslima is sent out packing when it doesn't suit political climate!

As someone had said, 'every man has a right to say what s/he thinks truth and every other person has a right to knock him down for it. And martyrdom is the test!

Time alone will demonstrate us in Swamy Vs Secular case as to who stand to be martyred.
